DIRECTIONS TO
BIBLE BAPTIST
CHURCH OF E
RIE
1 mile south of HWY 52
ERIE -- While the baby slept in the back seat of their Volkswagen bug, she held index cards and quizzed
her husband on Greek verb conjugation.

The tutoring happened on the road then, in the late 1960s, because three months before he graduated
from Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Mo., a church 200 miles off campus called him to preach.

So, the Duncans used the weekend drive time to catch up with each other and to prepare for his 7:30 a.m.
Monday Greek class.

"I would say that we've been a good team, even though I never wanted to marry a pastor," Jewell Duncan,
64, said.

That wish stemmed from her childhood, one marked by frequent moves related to her father's work as a
church planter, she explained.

But when she met Jim Duncan, now 67, during their college days, she changed her mind.

Not that getting to know him was easy.

The conservative college where they met sanctioned just one night a week as a date night.

So on Friday nights they often dined at a romantic restaurant overlooking the Springfield Regional Airport's
runway.

Beyond that, he could visit her in the so-called dating parlor of the women's dormitory from 7 to 9 p.m.
Tuesdays and Thursdays, so long as the chaperone showed up.

Jewell and Jim nevertheless fell in love and wed on May 24, 1968, at New Testament Baptist Church in
Springfield.

Now, as they approach their 45th wedding anniversary, they better appreciate how compatibility can stem
from differences as much as similarities, they said.

"He's type A. I'm type B. He's a go-getter. I'm more slow. But I'm sure," Jewell said.

They laughed reminiscing beside a fire in the fellowship hall where they work at the Bible Baptist Church of
Erie.

"I'm stuck in high gear. She's stuck in low gear," Jim, 67, added.

He preaches, and she plays the piano along with coordinating church activities such as camping trips, skit
nights and potluck dinners. The efficient, high-profile teamwork makes this match look perfect.

But both balked at the thought.

"My personal mission statement is to preach, pray and plug away," Jim said, cracking a smile. "Sometimes
you don't feel like it. But that's what you do at church, at home, in marriage and in life."

Jewell added that being transparent about the ups and downs of marriage and family life during their more
than 40 years in ministry has allowed them to receive support and care from others instead of always
giving it.

That way of being together and in community makes their big picture a happy one, they said.

"We know the importance of the little things -- whether it is the language of sweetness or whether it be
deeds that daily communicate love and respect," Jim said.

The couple have three grown children -- Timothy Duncan, 42, of Dallas; J.D. Duncan, 40, of Longmont; and
Carey (Duncan) Bueno, 37, of Longmont -- and three grandchildren.
